The Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of some 30,000 Inari shrines throughout Japan, which received the highest rank of Shoichi (Shoichi) in 942 (Tenkei 5). It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Kyoto, ranked first in Japan in a travel agency’s ranking of popular sightseeing spots in Japan among foreigners. Mount Inari, the southernmost of the 36 peaks of Higashiyama, is said to have more than 3,000 red torii gates, and is also famous for the Oyama Meguri, a 4 km pilgrimage course with spots along the way where you can see the whole of Kyoto city. The 1,000 torii gates are also popular with foreign tourists and are always crowded with people.
