Goshiki-numa or Five Colored Pond, is a natural marvel located in the Urabandai region of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The pond is part of the Bandai-Asahi National Park, which is known for its stunning natural scenery and outdoor activities. Goshiki-numa is a group of small lakes, each with its unique color, located in a volcanic area that was formed by the eruption of Mount Bandai in 1888. The eruption was one of the most catastrophic in Japanese history, resulting in the loss of over 500 lives and extensive damage to the surrounding area. The five ponds are named after their colors: Aka-numa (red pond), Ao-numa (blue pond), Midori-numa (green pond), Kuro-numa (black pond), and Beni-numa (crimson pond). The colors of the ponds change with the seasons and weather conditions, making each visit a unique experience. The most striking of the five ponds is the Ao-numa, which is a vivid blue-green color that looks like a mystical oasis in the middle of the forest. The color of the water is due to the natural minerals that dissolve in the water and the depth of the pond, which allows for the reflection of the blue sky above. Visitors can explore the ponds by hiking along the trails that weave through the forested area. The hike is a relatively easy one, with the trail being mostly flat and well-maintained. The entire walk takes about 3 to 4 hours, with plenty of rest areas and observation decks along the way. In addition to the ponds, the Urabandai region is also known for its hot springs, skiing, and other outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing soak in the hot springs after a long day of hiking or skiing in the winter months. The area also has several ski resorts that offer a variety of slopes for skiers of all levels. The Bandai-Asahi National Park is a year-round destination that attracts visitors from all over the world. In the fall, the forested area around the ponds turns into a colorful wonderland as the leaves change color, making it an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts. In the winter, the area transforms into a winter wonderland, with the ponds freezing over, and the surrounding mountains covered in snow. The Urabandai region is also known for its local cuisine, which includes delicious dishes made from freshwater fish, such as rainbow trout and char. Visitors can enjoy these dishes at the various restaurants and eateries in the area. Overall, Goshiki-numa is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Its natural beauty, unique features, and accessibility make it an ideal spot for a day trip or a weekend getaway. The area is easily accessible by car or public transportation, with several bus routes connecting the ponds to nearby cities and towns.
