Nestled in the heart of the Japanese Alps, Kamikochi (上高地) in Nagano prefecture is a picturesque valley known for its stunning natural beauty and rugged hiking trails. Located within the Chubu Sangaku National Park, this scenic spot is popular among nature lovers, hikers, and adventure seekers looking for a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Kamikochi is situated at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level and stretches over 15 kilometers. The valley is surrounded by majestic peaks, including the Hotaka Mountain Range, which boasts Japan’s third-highest peak, Mt. Hotaka. The pristine Azusa River meanders through the valley, adding to the natural charm of the place. The lush green forests of Kamikochi are home to several species of flora and fauna, including the iconic Japanese macaques, known locally as snow monkeys. The history of Kamikochi dates back to the Edo period, when the area was used as a hunting ground for the local lords. In the Meiji era, the area was opened up for tourism, and the first hotel, Kamikochi Imperial Hotel, was built in 1896. Today, Kamikochi is a well-developed tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over Japan and beyond. One of the main attractions of Kamikochi is the hiking trails that crisscross the valley, leading visitors through some of the most breathtaking scenery in Japan. There are trails for hikers of all abilities, from leisurely strolls along the Azusa River to challenging treks up to the summit of Mt. Hotaka. One of the most popular hikes is the 3.3-kilometer-long Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond Trail, which takes visitors past several stunning natural landmarks, including Taisho Pond, a picturesque body of water formed after the eruption of Mt. Yakedake in 1915. Another must-see attraction in Kamikochi is the Kappa Bridge, a picturesque wooden bridge spanning the Azusa River. The bridge is said to be inhabited by Kappas, mythical creatures from Japanese folklore, and is a popular spot for photography. Visitors can also take a stroll along the riverside promenade, which offers stunning views of the valley. For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, Kamikochi offers several other activities, including fishing, birdwatching, and camping. The area around the Azusa River is a popular spot for fishing, with several species of trout and char found in the river. The lush forests of Kamikochi are also home to several species of birds, including the white-throated dipper and the Japanese green woodpecker. Visitors to Kamikochi can also enjoy a range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to traditional Japanese inns, or ryokans. The Kamikochi Imperial Hotel, which was the first hotel in the valley, is still in operation and offers visitors a taste of the glamour of a bygone era. For a more traditional experience, visitors can stay in one of the many ryokans, which offer guests the chance to sleep on futon mattresses on tatami mats and enjoy traditional Japanese meals. In addition to its natural beauty and outdoor activities, Kamikochi is also known for its seasonal events. In spring, the valley is blanketed in cherry blossoms, while in autumn, the trees turn fiery shades of red and orange, creating a spectacular display of color. During the winter months, Kamikochi is covered in snow, and visitors can enjoy snowshoeing and other winter activities. Overall, Kamikochi is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Nagano prefecture.
