Lake Toya is the third largest caldera lake in Japan, with a distinctive round shape and a hot spring resort on its banks. It is characterised by its ropeway, canoeing and other activities. A sightseeing boat departs from the hot spring resort for a 50-minute cruise around Nakajima on the lake, where you can see Oshima, Bentenjima, Manjujima and Kannonjima. All of these islands are uninhabited, so there is a quiet and somewhat mysterious atmosphere. On Oshima, the only island where you can disembark, the Nakajima-Lake Forest Museum opened in April 2021, with natural history exhibition facilities and a footpath course for trekking. Weather permitting, the natural beauty of Lake Toya can be fully appreciated, with views of Mt Usu, Mt Showa Shinzan and Mt Yotei in the distance.
