Nagasaki (長崎)

Nagasaki is located in the western end of Kyushu. The western, southern and eastern sides of the city face the sea, with the Goto Sea, Tachibana Bay and Omura Bay. Commercial and business functions are concentrated in the flat areas within Nagasaki Port, which together with the sloping urban area centred on Nagasaki Port, form a unique urban landscape. The islands of Nagasaki are close to the Korean Peninsula and the Chinese mainland, and have been an important point of maritime traffic and a hub of trade and exchange since ancient times.

Places to visit in Nagasaki

1. Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum (長崎原爆資料館)

Our Recommendation
4.5/5

A memorial museum that teaches us about war and the atomic bomb

Best time to visit: All year

The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum is a facility where visitors can face the atomic bomb, war and peace in depth. The museum exhibits the devastation of the atomic bombing in a variety of ways, including the remains of houses and clothing damaged by the bomb, paintings depicting the devastation, photographs of the immediate aftermath of the bombing, and certificates of damage from the bombing. The exhibition is easy to understand and tells a story of how the atomic bombs were dropped, the history of nuclear weapons development and the desire for peace, making visitors think again about what the atomic bombs were and what peace means. The museum also focuses on peace education and has a library where visitors can read books on the atomic bombing and peace, as well as a video corner.

2. Glover Garden (グラバー園)

Our Recommendation
4.5/5

Home to the oldest Western-style buildings in the country.

Best time to visit: All year

In Glover Garden, visitors can see nine traditional buildings built during the period of the foreign settlement. Among these, the Old Glover House is the residence of Thomas Blake Glover, who is said to have had a major influence on the history of the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. It is said to have been a place of exchange with Sakamoto Ryoma and other figures active at the end of the Edo period, and is the oldest wooden Western-style building in Japan. The retro mansion with its exotic atmosphere is a recommended spot for visitors to feel a sense of history, with Japanese-style architecture used in places. There is also a service where you can have your photo taken in a cute retro dress in the park’s Western-style mansion.

3. Mt Inasa (稲佐山)

Our Recommendation
4.5/5

One of the best night views you can experience in Japan

Best time to visit: All year (at night)

Mount Inasa is a beautiful spot for night views and is popular for taking SNS-worthy photos. The view from the observatory is so beautiful that it has been called the “$10 million night view”. The night view, which is unique to the city of Nagasaki with its many slopes, is different and beautiful and well worth a visit. Of course, not only the night view, but also the morning and evening sunsets are beautiful, and on a clear day you can see as far as Mt Unzen and the Gotō Islands, providing an exhilarating view. The restaurant near the observatory is a perfect spot to enjoy the night view in a stylish space while having a meal in a relaxed atmosphere.

4. Iki Island (壱岐島)

Our Recommendation
4.5/5

An island where the crystal-clear sea offers healing

Best time to visit: All year

The best thing about Iki Island is the emerald green sea, which is so clear you can see the seabed. The Tatsunoshima sightseeing tour, which has a reputation for looking like it is floating when photographed from a distance, is particularly recommended. In addition to sightseeing, it is also possible to land on the uninhabited island. Ohama Beach has beautiful white sand, and just strolling along the beach while listening to the sound of the waves is soothing, and there are many famous power spots on the island that are popular for boosting luck. Why not spend a luxurious time on the island, enjoying fresh seafood dishes unique to the island?

5. Gunakanjima Island (軍艦島)

Our Recommendation
4.5/5

An uninhabited island listed as a World Heritage Site.

Best time to visit: All year

Gunkanjima Island, also called Hashima Island, has attracted much attention recently as a World Heritage Site representing Industrial Revolution Heritage Sites of Meiji Japan. Although the island is currently uninhabited, it was home to some 5,300 people involved in coal mining from the late Edo period to the Showa period at its peak. Visiting from the sea is good, but the best way to see the island is to go ashore. You can get a first-hand look at the once prosperous town and the living of that time. It is recommended to visit the museum before going ashore to learn more about the island. To land on the island, you need to join the Gunkanjima Landing Tour operated by the ship companies. Please note that depending on the weather conditions, it may not be possible to land on the island.

6. Huis Ten Bosch (ハウステンポス)

Our Recommendation
4.5/5

The largest theme park in Japan

Best time to visit: All year

Huis Ten Bosch, which means ‘house in the forest’ in Dutch, is one of the largest theme parks in Japan, recreating medieval Holland. Some of the events include One Million Tulips Festival, where the largest number of tulip varieties in Japan are exhibited, the Rose Festival, where the whole scenery is covered in roses, and so on. From autumn to winter, the world’s largest 13 million light bulbs shine in the ‘Kingdom of Light’, creating a dreamlike nightscape before your eyes. There is also a wide range of activities for children and adults to enjoy together, such as the Adventure Park, a collection of athletic facilities for playing in nature.

We absolutely agree that the Japanese language is not an easy language to master. Japanese has a completely different letters compared to European language which uses the common alphabet and understanding its unique grammar and pronunciation can be extremely difficult. To add to this ordure, the Japanese people are not the best when it comes to English which makes communication with the locals a very difficult task.
