Best parks to go on a picnic in Central Tokyo

While there are many parks in Tokyo in terms of number, most tend to be tiny ones residing in the middle of a residential area. Therefore, it is somewhat difficult to find a park that is green and spacious enough to lie down, to relax and enjoy your picnic lunch. To make things easier for you, we have compiled a list of the best parks in central Tokyo to go on a picnic, so all that is left for you to do is to check out our list and get some plastic sheets at a 100 yen shop which you’ll be using to lie down on a fresh patch of grass.

Yoyogi Park

You’ll also see many foreigners sunbathing as well as the young and children playing baseball and soccer. While there are many places to spread your plastic sheets and lie down, it is also the busiest park and therefore, if you wish to not be disturbed and opt for a quieter atmosphere, the other parks on the list might be better. However, if you prefer the ambience with a livelier vibe and play around a little bit, Yoyogi park would be the park for you. It is also close to the Meiji Jingu and Harajuku so there are tons of things you can do once you’re done in the park.

Shinjuku Gyoen

Shinjuku Gyoen is a beautiful park which contains three gardens with the exception one being the Japanese traditional garden. While you would need to pay to get in, with the charge being JPY 500 for adults (JPY 250 for students and adults over 65) but free for kids, it is definitely worth visiting, with its beautiful scenery, its pristinely shaped bonsai trees as well as clear cut patches of green grass, which is a rarity in Japan especially since many of the other parks are overrun by weed. Since it is close to Shinjuku, there are many options to grab take away so it may well be the perfect place to have your picnic.

Hibiya Park

Right in the heart of Tokyo, it is a convenient place to get a take away after sightseeing or shopping around the Hibiya~Ginza area. While in comparison to the other parks on the list, it may lack the space to lie down, considering the convenient location in which it is placed, we can’t complain. Furthermore, Hibiya park is also a cool place to visit as there are many events taking place every now and then, with the most famous one being the Christmas market in December.

Shinjuku Chuo Park

Probably the most obscure park and yet, potentially one of the most underrated parks in Tokyo, the Shinjuku Chuo Park sits right beside the Tokyo Metropolitan building. With many high-rise buildings placed in the area, it is difficult to imagine that there is a park spacious enough to have a picnic. While it may sound to good to be true, Shinjuku Chuo Park is an amazing place where you can relax and have a great time, and you’ll hardly notice the commotion of the city. The grass in the park is neatly cut and is spacious enough to accommodate many. It is also worth mentioning that there is a Starbucks within the park, enabling you to get a dose of caffeine or get a cold Frappuccino to quench your thirst. Since you’re there, you might as well visit the Observatory in the 45^th floor of the Tokyo Municipal building, which is open from 9:30 to 23:00, where you will be able to get a great view of the city.
