Best time to visit: All year

Shirayama-jima, or White Mountain Island, is a beautiful natural attraction located in the city of Higashine in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. This small, serene island is known for its stunning landscapes and natural beauty, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Shirayama-jima is a relatively small island, measuring just 2.5 kilometers in diameter. Despite its small size, the island is home to a diverse array of landscapes and environments, including forests, fields, and rocky cliffs. This natural diversity is what makes Shirayama-jima such a unique and beautiful place to visit. One of the main draws of Shirayama-jima is its stunning views of the surrounding countryside. From the island’s highest point, visitors can take in panoramic views of the rolling hills and forests of Yamagata, as well as the distant peaks of the Japanese Alps. These views are especially breathtaking during the fall, when the leaves of the trees in the surrounding countryside change color, creating a mosaic of red, yellow, and orange. In addition to its scenic views, Shirayama-jima is also home to several interesting historical sites. One of the most notable is the Irihirogami-toge pass, which is said to have been used as a strategic location by the ancient Takeda clan during the Warring States period. Another historical site is the ruins of a castle that once stood on the island, which is now a popular spot for picnicking and hiking. Despite its small size and remote location, Shirayama-jima is surprisingly accessible. Visitors can reach the island by taking a ferry from the nearby port of Higashine, which takes about 20 minutes. Once on the island, there are several trails and paths that visitors can follow to explore
